Situated in the Southern Interior of beautiful British Columbia, the ONA serves the Indigenous communities of the Okanagan Valley region. Established in 1981, the ONA ensures the efficient delivery of a diverse array of services and oversees the operations of the eight communities comprising the Syilx Nation.

About the Opportunity

Okanagan Nation Alliance has an exciting opportunity for a full-time Accountant, based in Kelowna, BC.

Reporting to the Financial Administrator you will be responsible for performing the day-to-day accounting functions of the ONA including budget management, month/year-end procedures and supervision of staff.

Your responsibilities include, but are not limited to:

  • Managing day-to-day accounting functions, including updating spreadsheets, developing templates, and monitoring department budgets
  • Assisting with Accounts Payable and Accounts Receivable while supervising staff members
  • Reviewing trial balance, balance sheet, payroll, AP, and AR to ensure accuracy as part of month-end procedures
  • Reconciling bank statements and generating monthly management financial reports, analyzing variances
  • Ensuring ongoing compliance with internal controls, GAAP, and statutory reporting requirements
  • Providing ongoing input for the audit process and liaising with auditors to ensure timely delivery of information and schedules
  • Continuously offering recommendations to enhance the efficiency of accounting processes within the community
  • Supporting the development of improved accounting practices to better serve the First Nations community

More About You

To qualify for this role, you must possess an Accounting degree or a recognized accounting designation. Additionally, a minimum of 3 years of experience in finance-related roles is required, coupled with expertise in strategic planning, human resources, administration, financial management, and project oversight. An equivalent combination of education and practical experience is also considered. Preference will be given to candidates with experience in managing finance programs or projects within First Nations communities. Availability of a reliable vehicle and a valid Class 5 BC Driver's License are also required for this role.

The following skills and experience will be strong assets:

  • Proficiency in Microsoft Office, QuickBooks, and project management software
  • In-depth knowledge of First Nations and Federal government decision-making processes and a strong background in accounting management practices
  • Proven expertise in all facets of accounting
  • Capable of working both independently and collaboratively in a team, performing well under pressure, meeting deadlines, and exhibiting highly effective accounting skills with acute attention to detail
  • Essential skills in verbal and written communication, along with motivational abilities
  • Strong judgment, tact, interpersonal skills, initiative, teamwork, and meticulous attention to detail
  • Experience in handling Federal and other funding agreements is advantageous, with direct experience in accounting roles within a First Nations community or organization being highly preferred
  • Proficient in multitasking and delegation to efficiently manage workloads
  • Demonstrated organizational, time management, and presentation skills

About the Benefits

In exchange for your hard work and dedication, you will receive a highly competitive salary of $59,000 to $79,000 based on skills and experience, along with a great host of benefits, including:

  • 2 weeks vacation to start and paid Christmas closure each year
  • Paid statutory holidays as well as specific First Nation holidays
  • 20% for benefits on top of salary to reach total compensation
  • Core hours of work are 8.30 am until 4.30 pm each day, Monday to Friday
